Early Life

Major Somnath Sharma was born on 31 January 1923 in a Brahmin family. He did his schooling from Sherwood College Nainital and later he went to Royal Military College for further studies. Since childhood, he is strongly influenced by Bhagwat Geeta , taught to him by his grandfather.

Major Somnath Sharma Military Career

After completing graduation from the Royal Military College, he was commissioned in to the 8th Battalion,19th Hyderabad Regiment (British Indian Army) on 22 February 1942. This battalion later became the fourth battalion of the Indian Army, Kumaon Regiment.

The first war on Kashmir started between India and Pakistan on 22 October 1947 and then Troops were deployed to Kashmir on behalf of the Indian Army to respond to Pakistan and under this deployment, on 31 October 1947, the 4th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment Posted under the leadership of Major Somnath Sharma and at that time Major Somnath Sharma had a plaster on his left hand because he was hurt while playing hockey some time ago And on 3 November 1947, a batch of three company was deployed in Badgam area for patrolling.

And at this time the duty of these troops was to check the intruders who were moving towards Srinagar who were trying to come to Srinagar from the north side, but at that time two of the three companies had gone back due to no visible movement of the enemy but Somnath Sharma’s D Company had an order to do his duty there by 3:00 pm and firing started on his D Company at 2:35 pm but Major Somnath Sharma did not have orders to  counter fire and only then 700 intruders started coming towards Srinagar and Major Somnath Sharma’s company was surrounded by the intruders and gun firing started, in this firing Major Somnath Sharma’s D Company suffered a lot of damage and then Major Somnath Sharma Decided to fight with those intruders.

Major Somnath Sharma’s D Company was quite small but still his D Company kept on fighting with these intruders and meanwhile Major Somnath Sharma decided that he would supply ammunition to the person operating the light machine gun and in the meantime Major was supplying the ammunition to his soldier suddenly an enemy mortar fell on him due to which his body was mutilated and after which his body was identified with Bhagwat Geeta and his pistol in his pocket. In this encounter, 20 soldiers were killed along with Major Somnath. Despite being low in numbers, Major Somnath Sharma’s D Company killed about 200 intruders.

Param Vir Chakra

 

Major Somnath Sharma attained Virgati at the age of 24 and on 21 jume 1950 he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously for his bravery and he was the first Indian to be posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
